Varanasi — Sarnath

Varanasi · Sarnath

Rise before dawn for a serene sunrise boat ride along the sacred Ganges. Watch as the city awakens with pilgrims performing their morning rituals on the ancient ghats. Visit Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Drive 10 km to Sarnath, where Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. Visit the Dhamek Stupa, the Deer Park, Mulagandhakuti Vihara and the excellent Archaeological Museum. Return to Varanasi for overnight.

3

Varanasi to Bodhgaya

Varanasi · Bodhgaya

After breakfast, drive approximately 6 hours to Bodhgaya — the most sacred of all Buddhist pilgrimage sites. En route, stop at the Rajgir hills (optional) where Buddha often meditated. Check in to your hotel and spend the evening in peaceful contemplation at the Mahabodhi Temple complex. As dusk falls, the temple is beautifully illuminated — a deeply moving sight. Overnight at Bodhgaya.

4

Bodhgaya Full Day

Bodhgaya

A full, sacred day at Bodhgaya. Begin with an early morning meditation session under the sacred Bodhi Tree — the very tree under which Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment 2,500 years ago. Visit the Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the numerous monasteries built by Buddhist nations including the Thai, Japanese, Tibetan, Bhutanese and Chinese monasteries. In the afternoon, visit Dungeshwari Cave Temples where Buddha meditated before enlightenment. Attend evening prayers. Overnight at Bodhgaya.

5

Bodhgaya to Nalanda to Rajgir

Nalanda · Rajgir

After breakfast, drive to Nalanda — site of the ancient Nalanda University, one of the greatest centers of learning in the ancient world. Visit the excavated ruins and the Nalanda Museum. Continue to Rajgir, a place of great significance — Buddha spent several rainy seasons here. Visit Griddhakuta Hill (Vulture's Peak) where Buddha delivered many important discourses. Explore the hot springs and Vishwa Shanti Stupa. Return to Bodhgaya for overnight.

6

Bodhgaya to Kushinagar

Kushinagar

Drive to Kushinagar, the place where Lord Buddha passed into Parinirvana. Visit the magnificent Parinirvana Temple housing a 6-meter long reclining Buddha statue, the Ramabhar Stupa (the cremation site), and the Matha Kuar Shrine. The atmosphere here is profoundly peaceful and contemplative. Visit several monasteries. Overnight at Kushinagar.
