Tour Overview

Ladakh — the 'Land of High Passes' — is one of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth: a high-altitude cold desert at the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, ringed by the world's mightiest mountain ranges. The roads here pass through barren moonscapes, cross rivers of turquoise meltwater, and lead to ancient Buddhist monasteries that cling to cliff faces above fertile green valleys. The famous Pangong Lake, appearing suddenly in the stark landscape, turns from sapphire blue to emerald green to silver with the shifting light. Ladakh is not a destination — it is a transcendence.

Day-wise Itinerary
1

Arrival in Leh — Acclimatization

Leh (3,500m)

Arrive at Leh Airport and transfer to hotel. The day is kept completely free for acclimatization to the altitude (3,500 meters). This is critical — do not exert yourself. Rest, hydrate, eat light. In the afternoon, a short gentle walk around Leh Market and Leh Palace (exterior only) to begin adjusting. Overnight in Leh.

2

Leh — Local Monasteries

Leh

Second acclimatization day with gentle sightseeing. Visit Leh Palace (17th century, modeled on the Potala Palace in Lhasa), Namgyal Tsemo Monastery above the palace, Shanti Stupa with its panoramic views, the Leh Mosque, and the Jama Masjid. Visit the local market in Leh. Overnight in Leh.

3

Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La

Nubra Valley

Drive over Khardung La Pass (5,359 m) — one of the highest motorable roads in the world. Breathtaking views of the Karakoram Range. Descend into the surprisingly green and warm Nubra Valley. Visit Diskit Monastery (a 14th-century gompa with a 32-meter Maitreya Buddha facing Pakistan). Afternoon: the extraordinary double-humped Bactrian camel safari on the sand dunes at Hunder — the most surreal image in Ladakh: camels against Himalayan peaks. Overnight in Nubra Valley camp/guesthouse.

4

Nubra Valley — Sumur & Panamik

Nubra Valley

Explore the upper reaches of Nubra Valley: Sumur Monastery, Samstanling Monastery, and optionally the hot springs at Panamik. The valley, watered by the Shyok and Nubra rivers, supports clusters of villages, apricot orchards and poplar trees. This is the old Silk Road that connected India with Central Asia. Return to Leh via Khardung La. Overnight in Leh.

5

Leh to Pangong Tso Lake

Pangong Lake (4,350m)

The most anticipated day: drive to Pangong Tso via Chang La Pass (5,360 m). The road descends through stark, sculptural landscapes to the lake — and when it first appears, the shock of its color is overwhelming. Pangong Tso stretches 134 km with only 60 km in India, the rest in China. The color shifts from deep blue to emerald to silver as the light moves. Overnight in a tent camp at the lakeside — falling asleep to the sound of waves and waking to the most extraordinary sunrise in the Himalayas.

6

Pangong Sunrise & Return to Leh

Pangong · Leh

Rise before dawn for the Pangong sunrise — the most magical moment of the journey. The sky turns blood red, then gold, then pale blue as the mountains wake. After a leisurely morning at the lake, drive back to Leh via Chang La. Stop at Tangste village and Durbuk along the way. Overnight in Leh.

7

Hemis & Thiksey Monasteries

Hemis · Thiksey · Shey

Visit Hemis Monastery — the largest and wealthiest monastery in Ladakh, famous for its Hemis Festival (June/July) and extraordinary collection of thangkas, silver stupas and Buddhist artifacts. Drive to Thiksey Monastery — a stunning 12-story complex perched on a hilltop often called 'Little Lhasa', housing a 15-meter Maitreya Buddha. Visit Shey Palace and its rock-cut Buddha images. Overnight in Leh.

8

Alchi & Sangam Point

Alchi · Sangam

Drive to the Sangam point where the turquoise Zanskar River meets the brown Indus — a dramatic visual confluence. Visit the Magnetic Hill (a natural optical illusion where vehicles appear to roll uphill). Continue to Alchi, home to 11th-century murals considered the finest surviving examples of early Kashmiri Buddhist painting. Return via Basgo Palace ruins. Farewell dinner in Leh. Overnight in Leh.

9

Departure from Leh

Leh Airport

After a final Ladakhi breakfast, transfer to Leh Airport. Due to altitude, morning flights to Delhi are standard. As your flight climbs above the Himalayas and the brown-and-white landscape of Ladakh spreads out below you, you will understand why those who come to Ladakh always carry a part of it within them, always.
